I was having a little discussion over at Blogs for Bush about home schooling vs. public schooling. I urged them not to give up on the public system, because it allows our children to socialize and learn proper behavior.
I was trying to come up with an example to use, when up popped Travis Frey. He is a man currently under arrest for rape and abuse of his wife. The thing that sets this case apart from all the others is the contract that he drew up for his wife - apparently the rape and abuse was a non-compliance penalty. Read the contract he drew up for his wife, over at thesmokinggun.com.
Then think. The man has sons. If they are home-schooled, will they not learn how to act in their marriages from their father?

As a sexual assault therapist in the midwest, I have to agree with the logic behind what you said!! There are many reasons that I am not always for home schooling... one of which is that many of the children I work with were so isolated that they couldn't tell anybody about their abuse (or they didn't know that what was happening was abnormal to begin with becuase all of their classmates (i.e. siblings) were also being abused. This is not to say that home schooling is never appropriate but there need to be more standards.
For example: the home schooling parents (or whomever is teaching the youth) should have the same educational credentials as a public school teacher (i.e. a BS and state licensure). Likewise, they should be DCFS approved as a school would be. Children also should be granted at least a certain percentage of time for social skills and extra curriculars at events which do not require their own parents/teachers be present (an opportunity to tell a different adult about abuse). Finally, "unschooling" has got to stop. I'm coming across more and more kids who do not know how to read by age 8+... reading should begin by age 4. I've become so jaded by home schooling that I now want to question all parents about their motives behind it and tell them "you make me believe your child is being abused".
